Lunch-in-the-Lounge: Dr. Ben Johnson

Description: The art of paper folding began in Japan in the 6th century.  However, in the past 30 years it has experienced a renaissance, maturing into a complex and expressive art form.  Artists can now leverage mathematical modeling and computer aided design to create fish bristling with individual scales, trains towing multiple cars, and musicians playing their instruments. All of this from a single uncut square of paper!  Scientists and engineers are now using paper folding insights to launch massive telescope lenses into space and to deliver delicate medical hardware to the arteries of their patients.

In this talk, Dr. Johnson will discuss the basic principles of origami design and their applications beyond creating works of art!
